Alva Noë

Alva Noë ist Professor für Philosophie und Kognitionswissenschaft an der University of California, Berkeley, wo er auch als Vorsitzender des Fachbereichs Philosophie tätig ist und dem Center for New Media sowie dem Institute for Cognitive and Brain Sciences angehört. Seine Forschungsgebiete umfassen die Philosophie der Wahrnehmung, des Geistes und der Kunst, wobei er insbesondere die Schnittstellen zwischen Phänomenologie, analytischer Philosophie und kognitiven Wissenschaften untersucht. 

Noë promovierte 1995 an der Harvard University und arbeitete unter anderem mit Daniel Dennett an der Tufts University sowie an der University of California, Santa Cruz, bevor er 2003 nach Berkeley wechselte. Sein sensomotorischer Ansatz zur Wahrnehmung und zum Bewusstsein plädiert für ein dynamisches Verständnis von Geist und Wahrnehmung als Resultat der Interaktion zwischen Organismus und Umwelt, verstanden als einen kognitiven Vorgang. Aktuell beschäftigt Noë sich außerdem mit Fragen zu Kunst, Ästhetik und Künstlicher Intelligenz. 

Neben seiner wissenschaftlichen Arbeit ist Noë Autor zahlreicher Bücher, darunter Action in Perception (2004), Out of Our Heads (2009) und zuletzt The Entanglement: How Art and Philosophy Make Us What We Are (2023). Er erhielt renommierte Auszeichnungen, wie ein Guggenheim Fellowship (2012) und den Judd Hume Prize (2018). 2024 war er als Einstein Visiting Fellow an der Freien Universität Berlin tätig und leitete dort das Forschungsprojekt »Reorganizing Ourselves«. 

Alva Noë is Professor of Philosophy and Cognitive Science at the University of California, Berkeley, where he also serves as Chair of the Department of Philosophy and is affiliated with the Center for New Media and the Institute for Cognitive and Brain Sciences. His research areas include the philosophy of perception, mind and art, with a particular focus on the intersection between phenomenology, analytic philosophy and cognitive science. 

Noë received his doctorate from Harvard University in 1995 and worked with Daniel Dennett at Tufts University and the University of California, Santa Cruz, before moving to Berkeley in 2003. His sensorimotor approach to perception and consciousness advocates a dynamic understanding of mind and perception as the result of the interaction between organism and environment, understood as a cognitive process. Noë is currently also working on issues regarding art, aesthetics and artificial intelligence. 

In addition to his academic work, Noë is the author of numerous books, including Action in Perception (2004), Out of Our Heads (2009) and most recently The Entanglement: How Art and Philosophy Make Us What We Are (2023). He has received prestigious awards such as a Guggenheim Fellowship (2012) and the Judd Hume Prize (2018). He was an Einstein Visiting Fellow at Freie Universität Berlin until 2024, where he led the research project »Reorganizing Ourselves«.
