Matthias Grotkopp

Matthias Grotkopp ist Juniorprofessor für Digital Film Studies am Seminar für Filmwissenschaft an der Freien Universität Berlin und leitet am SFB Intervenierende Künste das Teilprojekt »Intervenierende Weltentwürfe: Audiovisualität des Klimawandels«. Er war Post-Doc und stellvertretender Sprecher an der Kolleg-Forschungsgruppe Cinepoetics – Poetologien audiovisueller Bilder (2015-2024). Er hat mit einer Arbeit mit dem Titel »Filmische Poetiken der Schuld« (Berlin/Boston 2017) promoviert – englische Übersetzung »Cinematic Poetics of Guilt« (Berlin/Boston 2021). Seine Enttäuschung über die mangelnde globale politische Handlung gegen die Klimakrise führt ihn dazu, Forschung und Lehre verstärkt mit Klimaaktivismus zu verbinden. Das wichtigste intervenierende Moment in der Wissenschaft und in den Künsten sieht er in ihrer Fähigkeit, Perspektiven zu erweitern, Austausch zu generieren und Solidarität zu fördern.

Matthias Grotkopp is Assistant Professor for Digital Film Studies at the Seminar for Film Studies and supervises the project »Intervening World Projections: Audiovisuality of Climate Change« at the CRC Intervening Arts. He was a post-doc and deputy director at Cinepoetics – Center for Advanced Film Studies (2015-2024) at Freie Universität Berlin. He is the author of »Cinematic Poetics of Guilt. Audiovisual Accusation as a Mode of Commonality« (Berlin/Boston: De Gruyter 2021). He is increasingly disappointed by global political inaction on the climate crisis and tries to connect his research and teaching to climate activism. He sees the main potential of intervention in academia and the arts in their capacity to enlarge perspectives, enable exchange as well as to foster solidarity.
