Matthias Warstat

Matthias Warstat ist Professor für Theaterwissenschaft an der Freien Universität Berlin und erforscht die gesellschaftlichen und politischen Dimensionen des Theaters. Als stellvertretender Sprecher des SFB Intervenierende Künste leitet er das Teilprojekt »Teilhabe und Dissoziation«, das Spannungen im politischen Theater untersucht. Zudem ist er Principal Investigator im Exzellenzcluster Temporal Communities, wo er die globale Zirkulation von Theater und Literatur analysiert. 

Warstats Forschungsschwerpunkte umfassen das politische Theater, die Theatralität der Gesellschaft und die Theater- und Kulturgeschichte der Moderne. In Projekten wie The Aesthetics of Applied Theatre untersuchte er die Rolle angewandter Theaterformen in sozialen und politischen Kontexten. Seine Arbeiten, darunter »Krise und Heilung« (2011) und »Theatrale Gemeinschaften« (2005), zählen zu den zentralen Beiträgen der Theaterwissenschaft. 

Aktuell widmet er sich der Formvielfalt politischen Theaters im 20. Jahrhundert und dessen Wirkung auf gesellschaftliche Konflikte und Gemeinschaftsbildung. Warstat lehrt zu Gegenwartstheater und Theatergeschichte und fördert interdisziplinäre und globale Ansätze in der Theaterforschung.

Matthias Warstat is Professor of Theater Studies at Freie Universität Berlin and researches the social and political dimensions of theater. As deputy spokesperson of the CRC Intervening Arts, he heads the sub-project »Participation and Dissociation«, which investigates tensions in political theater. He is also a principal investigator in the EXC 2020 Temporal Communities, where he analyzes the global circulation of theater and literature. 

Warstat's research focuses on political theater, the theatricality of society and the theater and cultural history of modernity. In projects such as The Aesthetics of Applied Theatre, he has examined the role of applied theater forms in social and political contexts. His works, including »Krise und Heilung« (2011) and »Theatrale Gemeinschaften« (2005), are among the central contributions to theater studies. 

He is currently focusing on the diversity of forms of political theater in the 20th century and its impact on social conflicts and community building. Warstat teaches contemporary theater and theater history and promotes interdisciplinary and global approaches in theater research.
