Marvin Systermans

Marvin Systermans arbeitet an der Schnittstelle zwischen Fotografie und künstlerischer Forschung. Seine Projekte erstrecken sich häufig über längere Zeiträume und beschäftigen sich mit Landschaften als Orte von politischer Bedeutung sowie mit der Kartierung globaler Verbindungen und historischer Kontinuitäten. Im Mittelpunkt seines jüngsten Werkkomplexes, dem hybriden Langzeitprojekt »Canary in a Garden«, steht die Beziehung zwischen der kolumbianischen Region La Guajira, wo der großflächige Kohleabbau Ökosysteme und indigene Gemeinschaften destabilisiert, und Orten des strukturellen Wandels in Deutschland, wo postindustrielle Landschaften oft als ästhetisierte Leerstellen erscheinen und die Energiewende mit massiven Kohleimporten aus La Guajira einhergeht. Zwischen diesen geografischen Polen verfolgt das Projekt eine kritische Kartografie planetarischer Abhängigkeiten vom Rohstoffabbau. Das Projekt kombiniert Fotografie, Archivmaterial, Text und Interviews, um die Stimmen derjenigen einzubeziehen, die am stärksten vom Neo-Extraktivismus betroffen sind. Systermans Fotografien hinterfragen vertraute Perspektiven und lenken die Aufmerksamkeit auf analytische und poetische Weise auf vermeintlich zufällige oder übersehene Aspekte des Alltagslebens. In »Canary in a Garden« fungiert die Kamera als epistemisches Werkzeug, das ökologische, wirtschaftliche und koloniale Verflechtungen aufzeigt und Fragen zu Verantwortung, Repräsentation und Ressourcen-Gerechtigkeit aufwirft.

Neben seiner künstlerischen Arbeit ist er auch Teil des Teams der Spore Initiative in Berlin. Die Spore Initiative fördert Kulturprojekte an der Schnittstelle von Klimagerechtigkeit, ökologischer Regeneration und Bildung im Dialog mit Umweltschützenden im globalen Süden und Norden.

Marvin Systermans lebt und arbeitet zwischen Berlin und Barranquilla und bewegt sich zwischen Orten, an denen Extraktivismus, Erinnerung und Widerstand in Landschaften eingeschrieben sind, die er in seinen Werken dokumentiert.

Marvin Systermans works at the intersection of photography and artistic research. His projects frequently evolve across extended timeframes, engaging with landscapes as sites of political significance, as well as mapping global interconnections and historical continuities. At the center of his most recent body of work, the hybrid long-term project »Canary in a Garden«, is the relationship between the Colombian region of La Guajira, where large-scale coal mining is destabilizing eco-systems and Indigenous communities, and places of structural change in Germany, where post-industrial landscapes often present themselves as aestheticized voids and the green energy transition is accompanied by massive coal imports from La Guajira. Between these geographical poles, the project pursues a critical cartography of planetary extractive dependencies. The project combines photography, archival material, text and interviews to include voices of those most affected by neo-extractivism. Systermans' photographs challenge familiar perspectives and draw attention, in both analytical and poetic ways, to the supposedly incidental or overlooked aspects of everyday life. In »Canary in a Garden«, the camera functions as an epistemic tool that reveals ecological, economic and colonial interdependencies and raises questions about responsibility, representation and resource justice.

In addition to his artistic work, he is also part of the Spore Initiative team in Berlin. Spore Initiative facilitates cultural projects at the intersection of climate justice, ecological regeneration and education, in dialogue with earth protectors in the Global South and the Global North.

Marvin Systermans lives and works between Berlin and Barranquilla, moving between places where extractivism, memory and resistance are inscribed in landscapes that he documents in his works.
