Jan Dammel

Jan Dammel is a theatre and cultural studies scholar who specialises in the cultural history of colonialism, as well as artistic interventions in the present that engage with the legacies of colonialism. As a postdoctoral researcher on the »Acoustic Disruptions« project at the Collaborative Research Centre (CRC) Intervening Arts, he curates and hosts Season Five of the Sonic Interventions podcast and coordinates the editorial process for an edited volume.
He studied Theatre Studies and Comparative Literature in Berlin, Lille and Amsterdam. Between 2019 and 2023, he was a doctoral fellow at the Research Training Group Minor Cosmopolitanisms at Potsdam University. Based on extensive archival research in Tanzania and Germany, his cultural studies doctoral thesis, which he submitted and defended in 2025, investigates entanglements of theatre and performance with German colonialism in East Africa between the late 1880s and 1916. Moreover, Jan has considerable experience in the field of project and event management across a variety of sectors.
