Emily Kindermann

Ich bin Masterstudentin im Fach Gesellschafts- und Wirtschaftskommunikation an der Universität der Künste (UdK) Berlin. Meine Forschung konzentriert sich auf ästhetische Formen in kulturellen Artefakten – sowohl in der Vergangenheit als auch in der Gegenwart –, wobei mein aktuelles Interesse dem Grotesken und dem Glitch gilt. Mit meinem Hintergrund in Literatur und Fremdsprachen beschäftige ich mich mit Fragen der Sprache, der Repräsentation und der Konstruktion, Vermittlung und Hinterfragung von Bedeutung.

Ich interessiere mich besonders dafür, wie wir künstlerische Praktiken verinnerlichen, interpretieren und darauf reagieren. Außerdem faszinieren mich konzeptionelle und grenzüberschreitende Kunstformen – wie Multimedia-Installationen, somatische Performances, Noise-Musik und experimentelles Theater –, die sich traditionellen Kategorien entziehen und neue Wege des Wahrnehmens und Verstehens eröffnen. Meine aktuelle Forschung untersucht auch akustische Interventionen innerhalb der Medientheorie und Klang als Form der Handlungsfähigkeit, insbesondere in Bezug auf Geschlecht und ›Race‹ im kulturellen Kontext der schwarzen britischen Bevölkerung. Ich erforsche, wie Klang als Mittel des Widerstands und der Identitätsbildung fungieren kann.

Insgesamt ist meine Praxis von dem Wunsch getrieben, das kritische Potenzial von Kunst und Ästhetik zu verstehen – wie sie soziale Erfahrungen prägen, dominante Narrative hinterfragen und Raum für neue Arten des Sehens, Hörens und Seins in der Welt eröffnen.

I am an MA student in Gesellschafts- und Wirtschaftskommunikation at the Universität der Künste (UdK) Berlin. My research focuses on aesthetic modes in cultural artefacts—past and present—with recent interests in the grotesque and the glitch. With a background in literature and foreign languages, I explore questions of language, representation, and how meaning is constructed, communicated, and challenged.

I am particularly interested in how we internalise, interpret, and respond to artistic practices. I am also drawn to conceptual and boundary-pushing forms of art—such as multimedia installations, somatic performance, noise music, and experimental theatre—that resist traditional categories and invite new ways of sensing and understanding. My current research also investigates sonic interventions within media theory and sound as a form of agency, especially in relation to gender and ›race‹ within Black British cultural contexts. I explore how sound can function as a mode of resistance and identity formation.

Overall, my practice is driven by a desire to understand the critical potential of art and aesthetics—how they shape social experience, challenge dominant narratives, and open up space for new ways of seeing, listening, and being in the world.
