Aria Dean

Aria Dean (*1993) ist Künstlerin, Schriftstellerin, Kuratorin und Filmschaffende und lebt in New York. Nach ihrem Abschluss am Oberlin College 2015 arbeitete sie am Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles und bis 2021 als Assistant Curator für Rhizome, wo sie u. a. die Online-Ausstellung »New Black Portraitures« kuratierte. In ihrer Praxis verbindet sie Skulptur, Installation, Video und Text, um Fragen zu Repräsentation, digitaler Kultur, Kunstgeschichte sowie Black radical tradition, Afrofuturismus und Afropessimismus zu untersuchen. Ihre Werke, oft im Spannungsfeld von Abstraktion und Figuration, spielen mit minimalistischen Formen, digitalen Modellierungen und kunsthistorischen Referenzen.

Dean stellte international aus, darunter im Institute of Contemporary Arts London, der Renaissance Society Chicago, dem CAPC Bordeaux, im Schinkel Pavillon Berlin und in der Whitney Biennale 2022. Ihre Arbeiten befinden sich unter anderem im MoMA New York, im Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles und im De Pont Museum Tilburg. Als Autorin veröffentlichte sie in Artforum, Art in America, e-flux und Texte zur Kunst; 2023 erschienen ihre gesammelten Texte in dem Band »Bad Infinity«. Ihre künstlerische wie theoretische Arbeit ist geprägt von einer präzisen Auseinandersetzung mit den sozialen, historischen und ästhetischen Dimensionen von Kunstproduktion. Dabei verbindet sie kunsthistorische Bezüge mit digitalen Strategien zu einem eigenständigen, medienübergreifenden Werk.

Aria Dean (*1993) is an artist, writer, curator and filmmaker based in New York. After graduating from Oberlin College in 2015, she worked at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles and, until 2021, as assistant curator for Rhizome, where she curated the online exhibition »New Black Portraitures«, among other projects. In her practice, she combines sculpture, installation, video and text to explore questions of representation, digital culture, art history, Black radical tradition, Afrofuturism and Afropessimism. Her works, often situated at the intersection of abstraction and figuration, play with minimalist forms, digital modeling and art-historical references. 

Dean has exhibited internationally, including at the Institute of Contemporary Arts London, the Renaissance Society Chicago, the CAPC Bordeaux, the Schinkel Pavillon Berlin and the 2022 Whitney Biennial. Her works are in the collections of MoMA New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles and the De Pont Museum Tilburg, among others. As an author, she has published in Artforum, Art in America, e-flux and Texte zur Kunst; her volume »Bad Infinity« was published in 2023. Her artistic and theoretical work is characterized by a precise examination of the social, historical and aesthetic dimensions of art production. In doing so, she combines art-historical references with digital strategies to create an independent, cross-media body of work.
